In fact, the plot twists, character development and suspense that Goodwin and Simonson managed to fit into installments of eight or nine pages is phenomenal Oh, the plot?
Interpol agent Christine St. Clair is on the hunt for a man named Paul Kirk Christine isn't the only one after Kirk, and Kirk is on a quest of his own.
These searches intersect and reveal a sinister conspiracy of global proportion Mar 13, Norman rated it it was amazing Shelves: graphic-novel.
I was obsessed with comics when this series appeared in Detective Comics and it was so different at the time. Simonson's early artwork filled the page so much but was so readable.
Goodwin's writing, as usual, was clear and absorbing. And this gathering of the 7 episodes just reiterates what a great storyteller we lost when Archie Goodwin died.
This version of the book includes the 'silent' version of an eighth episode that Goodwin and Simonson drew up together but got put on the back burner unti I was obsessed with comics when this series appeared in Detective Comics and it was so different at the time.
This version of the book includes the 'silent' version of an eighth episode that Goodwin and Simonson drew up together but got put on the back burner until after Archie had died.
Walt Simonson does a great job of extending the myth but not ruining the finale in episode 8 Still a riveting read after all these years Jun 18, Rachel rated it liked it Shelves: comics.
The story doesn't have much more depth than an episode of the A Team, but it's elevated by Walt Simonson's singular and stunning artwork, and I do appreciate the chutzpah of view spoiler [killing off the protagonist at the end and leaving his sacrifice in place instead of retconning it away or leaving the possibility of his survival open hide spoiler ].
The TPB format shows off the full beauty of the art in the way that the cheap newsprint of the 70's comics failed to do and the new, largely silent epilogue is a magnificent piece of storytelling.
Jul 18, Austin Gaines rated it really liked it. Pretty good pulp adventure story. Great art by Walter Simonson. I liked that it had an ending.
And the writers never brought him back. A short good read of an action comic. Apr 09, Buddy rated it really liked it.
Sep 11, Michael rated it it was amazing. A masterpiece, and the epilogue is a fitting finale and tribute to Archie.
Sep 12, Jack Stubblefield rated it it was amazing. I had forgotten that these stories were shorts in the back of Detective Comics.
The whole story holds up really well. Definitely, recommend! Good stuff, Maynard. Sep 15, Scott rated it it was amazing. A great story then and now.
Simonson's art is stellar as usual. Goodwin's story and plot is to the point and action packed. This is a timeless work of art. Maravilloso es poco.
Jun 17, Brent rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: fans of great comics and graphic novels. Recommended to Brent by: DC Comics.
Shelves: comics , favorites , fiction , superhero. Rereading, this, the first great work of the great Walt Simonson, teamed with the late, great Archie Goodwin.
I ate this up, issue by issue, upon original release in Goodwin's editorial run on Detective Comics from the eponymous DC Comics, and reread it many times Color over the line art on this whole collection is by the great Klaus Janson, in moody overtones.
But, wow, also reading - for the first time? Introduction, from , and Walt's poignant Afterword, in one page, from God bless the talents of these fine creators.
I never tire of the panel-to-panel progressions of these short, taut stories. Counting, maost pages have more than twelve panels!
In the "The Final Chapter," Walt's storytelling can spread out and breathe. But these stories are timeless. Highest recommendation. Keep this in print, DC Comics.
Now, to find the IDW Artist's Edition of Walt's art Apr 14, Eric rated it really liked it Shelves: comics , superheros.
This was an interesting collection and great insight about the unusual way the story was created.
Basically this was a secondary story meant to fill the back of Detective Comics for awhile. Then they found themselves spending more time on this than the feature stories.
It kind of took on a life of its own and since the character was lesser known they were more free to make lasting changes. The compressed style really moves things along and you feel yourself wrapped up in it right away.
Written by matt I have a problem with a lot of people's review of "Manhunter". Every single bad review that criticizes Cox or Noonan invariably mentions the movie "Red Dragon" in the same breath.
How about being a little objective? On its own as the original Hannibal Lecter movie, Manhunter is a good movie. Cox plays Lecter convincingly, and you can read from other reviewers who praised his work shows that with a little objectivity we can see an alternative representation of Lecter.
Cox never seems to be acting, he really plays the part with mystery and ambiguity not like the distinctly maniacal Lecter that Hopkins portrays.
Cox plays a true psychopath - one devoid of feelings, and yet a consummate actor. Some of the world's best actors are in fact psychopaths.
A psychopath is not necessarily a killer - a psychopath is simply someone who does not feel for other human beings, which is often why the psychopath killers of this world were in fact convincing actors - for example Geoffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson.
So when we analyze the profiles of true psychopathic serial killers, we can quite clearly see that Cox plays the better Lecter than Hopkins. We can see Cox is devoid of compassion, and yet acts like a normal person.
Hopkins on the other hand, never passes the creepy stage - he is too creepy and doesn't have the "acting" ability of a true psychopath to mask that image from the public eye.
Cox shows that he could blend into normality without being caught. And therein lies the problem with the negative reviews.
We read countless negative reviews of this movie bemoaning the fact that Cox is not as creepy as Hopkins - but my dears, that is exactly why Cox plays the better Lecter!

David Edelstein. I'm intrigued by that stylistic envelope: simultaneously hypnotic and enervating, meditative and empty. Pat Graham. One of the most impressive American thrillers of the late '80s.
Geoff Andrew. The movie drives along with such intensity for much of the time that you can just let it work on your senses without worrying about whether it makes sense.

A beautifully conceived early work from Mann, Manhunter has aged like a fine Chianti. Nicholas Bell. Below here there be spoilers Matthew Rozsa. Perhaps over-stylized at times, the film is nevertheless a slick, absorbing murder mystery with characters that are bound to lure audiences back for future episodes.
Mike Massie. Steve Warren. Manhunter starts off being interesting, but almost with no transition, it ends up being solemnly boring.
